Deadline Feb. 12 for 2nd Girls STEAM Ahead program

The Homewood Science Center is accepting applications from girls in seventh through 12th grades for its second Girls STEAM Ahead program on Feb. 24.

This free event will bring girls interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) the opportunity to meet with professional women and to show off their own inventions and creations. The registration deadline is Feb. 12. The online application is available at homewoodsciencecenter.org.

The program at Idlewild Country Club in Flossmoor will open at 11 a.m. with a time to meet and mingle, giving girls the opportunity to pair with professionals in the fields they are interested in.

A STEAM showcase will have girls present their projects and give short presentations to others attending the meeting.
“We believe finding their voice is important,” said Edie Dobrez, director of the Homewood Science Center. “This will be an opportunity for them to speak in public and to hear professional women speak on STEAM topics.”

The luncheon speaker will be Patty Messersmith, senior educator at the Museum of Science and Industry, who will share how the world of science is all around and that the old view of male scientists in white coats working in laboratories isn’t a 21st century reality.

Organizers are preparing an online database of professionals that the girls will be able to call upon for advice on internships, job shadowing, research, volunteerism and how to find a mentor.

“There’s so much emphasis on academics — which is important — but we want them to focus on how (internships, job experience) will set you apart and help you decide what you like and don’t like” in a chosen field, Dobrez stressed.

The event will close with a hands-on project that will have girls begin a plan to reach their goals.
