Switch to new accountant saving park district $50,000

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners agreed to switch its accounting work to Lauterbach & Amen LLP. The move will save the district $50,000 over the next five years.

The board’s decision at its January meeting was unanimous.

The firm BKD, originally Wolf and Company, had been the auditor for many years. Superintendent of Finance and Administration Sharon Dangles told the commissioners that after completion of the last audit dated April 30, 2017, the firms merged.

Dangles said the park district staff decided “to see if we could obtain reduced pricing while still maintaining the quality services” from firms specializing in government work. She solicited bids for a five-year term and received four proposals. BKD was not among them.

Dangles and the board’s treasurer, Steve Ojode, selected two firms for interviews and chose Lauterbach & Amen LLP of Naperville.

They recommended this firm to the board because “they will have a partner involved with us throughout the year and provide us with resources, educational opportunities and a new perspective on relevant opportunities where we can improve efficiencies and internal controls,” Dangles reported to the commissioners at the January board meeting. The firm has expertise with government bodies, including the Village of Homewood, she said.

In other business, the board agreed at its December meeting to a long-term lease for space at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club with Conroy Orthopaedic & Sports Therapy, Ltd. The business has been renting space since 2014 and has a lease through February 2019. The user fee is $2,350 monthly.

Under the new agreement the lease is extended through November 2022 with increases of 2 percent each year.
