H-F High announces IB student honorees

Homewood-Flossmoor High School has announced graduates from the Class of 2017 who have received International Baccalaureate (IB) diplomas and certificates from the IB Diploma Programme.

Melinda Berman, Henry Heligas and Juno Suzuki were awarded IB diplomas.

Zoe Branch, Courtney Commodore, Kendra Fourte, Blessing Ibe and Zakiya Walker earned IB certificates.

Because this is an international program, students’ projects and academic reports are judged by IB Programme representatives after H-F’s June graduation to determine if these students met the mark for a diploma or certificate. Their successes were applauded by the school board at its December meeting.

The H-F Gifted Academy, a four-year program for academically talented students, enrolls students as a cohort taking AP classes their freshmen and sophomore years, and then with consultation from teachers, administrators and parents decide if they are academically, emotionally and mentally prepared to move into the rigid International Baccalaureate Programme as juniors.

The students take classes taught by H-F teachers that meet IB organization requirements, and they also take a specially designed two-year Theory of Knowledge course.  The program also includes work outside the classroom, including a mandated 4,000-word essay that students start in the second semester of their junior year, work on over the summer and complete in their senior year. And, each student completes a Creativity Action and Service project.

Although all these students were part of H-F’s Gifted Academy, those who received a certificate, rather than a diploma, chose not to fulfill the art/music/service-specific requirement.
