'Vagina Monologues' performance benefits SSFS

South Suburban Family Shelter will mark the 20th anniversary of VDAY, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, by presenting the Obie-award winning play “The Vagina Monologues” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Prairie State College, 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) provides caring and confidential help to victims of domestic violence. Staff professional counselors and advocates help clients identify and choose options in their life situations.

“The Vagina Monologues” features women discussing consensual and nonconsensual sexual experiences through a fictional series of accounts that playwright Eve Ensler based on more than 200 interviews she had conducted with women of different races and ages about their relationship with their bodies.

“The Vagina Monologues” has been translated into 48 languages and performed in more than 140 countries. In the 20 years since it was first performed and the text was published, the work has stirred women into action. The work is not without its critics, both from the religious institutions as well as feminists.

“We are very excited as this is the 20th anniversary of the VDAY movement and as always, the material presented in The Vagina Monologues is so relevant!” said Marie Goulet, program director.

For this production, Goulet has selected local actors and other professional women with no acting experience but with highly regarded professional positions, including work in advocacy, healthcare, education, social services and politics.

Tickets are $20 or two for $35 and $15 for students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.ssfs1.org/get-involved/events/vagina-monologues/ or by calling SSFS at 708-794-2140, ext. 303.
