Flossmoor sets forums for tax increase proposal

Before voters go to the polls March 20, administrators at the Village of Flossmoor have set two informational meetings to give insights into the reasons for the proposed sales tax increase.

The meetings will be at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, and 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

The village board is proposing a 1 percent sales tax be added to many goods and services sold in the village. Most grocery items, medical devices and prescription and non-prescription medications would be exempt from the tax.

Board members say the additional sales tax revenue will help offset rising infrastructure issues, including leaking water mains and crumbling sidewalks, and to maintain vital village services.

While the village and board members cannot actively campaign for the measure, the information meetings are intended to help residents understand the tax’s potential impact on village finances.
