Volunteers will learn about living with poverty at Oxfam Hunger Banquet March 2

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, people will gather at Flossmoor Community Church for an Oxfam Hunger Banquet, an interactive experience that teaches guests about food distribution and hunger throughout the world.
At the Oxfam Hunger Banquet guests draw tickets at random that assign each to a high, middle or low tier based on current statistics of people living in poverty. Each income tier receives a meal that corresponds to their income level.
Oxfam, an international organization working to end poverty, says global hunger is on the rise after a steady decline for more than 10 years. According to a United Nations report, approximately 815 million people suffer from chronic hunger worldwide.

About 80 percent of the world’s hungry people work as farmers, herders, fishers or laborers in rural communities. In these parts of the developing world, women are often responsible for the majority of food production, despite having restricted access to markets, land and credit.
The Hunger Banquet will bring attention to these issues to Flossmoor dinner participants to address the importance of building a better food system. Registration for the March 2 dinner is being accepted through Feb. 23 online.
This H-F area event is hosted by You Matter 2 Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering young people to step forward to work for change. The local You Matter 2 chapter organizer is Destiny Watson, a graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
