Homewood Dairy Queen crash driver dies

The driver of an SUV that in the early morning of July 17 crashed into a Dairy Queen at the corner of Ridge Road and Gladville Avenue in Homewood died Wednesday, according to a police statement.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office notified Homewood police that 27-year-old Demarques Heard, of Hazel Crest, died from his injuries, according to the release.

Heard was the driver of the Ford Expedition. A passenger in the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated at the hospital and released.

Police responded at approximately 3:27 a.m. to the 1700 block of Ridge Road for a report of a traffic crash. The vehicle was imbedded into the east side of the Dairy Queen. The passenger was outside the SUV when police arrived.

Heard had to be extracted by the Homewood Fire Department.

The Homewood Building Department will be assessing the damage to the structure of the building.

Kelly Welsh, manager of the store, told The H-F Chronicle she expects to announce the re-opening in four to six weeks.

Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit’s investigation is ongoing with assistance from the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team.

Anyone who may have information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 708/206-3420.
