Two student musicians at Homewood-Flossmoor High School have been selected as members of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Jazz Orchestra.

Sam Calhoon, son of Alanna Cotch and Rob Calhoon, will be a sophomore at H-F. He’s been playing the bass since fifth grade at Western Avenue School. He plays bass with the H-F orchestra and the H-F jazz band. This year he’ll also play drums with the H-F marching band.

Sam has been a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2015 starting in the debut orchestra, progressing to the concert orchestra and now is with the philharmonic orchestra.  His father was a member of CYSO and he encouraged Sam to join.

Ken, son of Sachi and Noboru Nakamura, will be a senior at H-F. He’s played alto saxophone since fifth grade at Millennium School. He will be a member of the H-F Viking Band for his fourth year. He traveled to Greece with the band in 2017. He started playing tenor sax when he joined the H-F Viking Jazz Band two years ago. This year, Ken also joined the Viking Choir.

Ken applied for the CYSO Jazz Orchestra after Sam told him of an opening in the saxophone section.

He plans to major in engineering in college, but said he hopes to join a jazz band at the college of his choice.
