Vikings drafted by MLB choose college

Two outstanding members of the Vikings baseball team at Homewood-Flossmoor High School were offered contracts in the Major League Baseball draft in June.

But left-handed pitcher Kyle Salley and outfielder Zaid Walker passed on the offers and instead will play ball in college. Both can be drafted by MLB after their third year of college.
After graduation June 3, Salley played ball in a California collegiate league to keep active for a month before taking a summer course at Duke University, where he will be a freshman. Baseball training sessions at Duke also start in July.

Salley was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. The son of Kimberly and Chris Salley of Flossmoor started in T-ball with Flossmoor Baseball and Softball. He also played with the Firebirds traveling team, and he was a player on the Sox ACE Program that offers educational opportunities and avenues to help young players pursue a career in collegiate or professional sports.

At H-F, Salley was a member of the National Honor Society, DECA business program, and played basketball his freshman and sophomore years.

Walker had several offers from MLB teams, the last from the Cincinnati Reds. The right fielder decided to stay with his college decision and play ball for Michigan State University.

The son of Marvin and Donyell Walker of Homewood said baseball has been his passion since he was 4 years old. H-F coach Todd Sippel recognized him for his leadership on the team and hard work off the field.
