Video shows two suspects in June 25 Flossmoor car burglary

A homeowner’s surveillance camera this week captured the image of two persons breaking into a car in Flossmoor.

In the video, one of the suspects, wearing a hooded shirt, opens the car’s passenger door and looks inside. A moment later, another person – who is bareheaded – opens the driver’s side door and rummages through the front of the vehicle. After that, they pop the car’s trunk before running away.

Flossmoor police released the video on Wednesday along with a news alert on a series of car burglaries that took place in the early morning hours on June 25.

Thieves entered several vehicles and stole property, police said, adding that there were no signs of forced entry into any vehicle, and all of the vehicles appeared to have been left unlocked.

The car burglaries occurred in the Heather Hill and Elaine Court areas of Flossmoor, police said. A few days, earlier two vehicles were entered on Burns and Bruce avenues.

Anyone with information on persons in the video are asked to call Flossmoor police at 708-957-4500. Residents should call 911 immediately to report suspicious activity or individuals.

“Burglaries to motor vehicles have been on the rise recently throughout the Chicagoland area including all of the surrounding communities,” police said. “In most instances, these individuals will park in a remote area then travel on foot, going from vehicle to vehicle looking for unlocked vehicle doors.”

Police asked residents not to store keys in their vehicles.

“In some vehicles valet keys can start the car, but can't unlock the trunk or the glove box,” police said.. “This key is normally used when someone else operates your vehicle, such as a valet parking attendant.”

Valet keys are sometimes found in the glove compartment or with the vehicle's user manual, and some owners are unaware of this key. Residents need to check their owner’s manual and glove box.
