Used cell phones helping to underwrite SSFS services

That old cell phone may be a cast-off to you, but it can be of benefit to South Suburban Family Shelter, a nonprofit organization offering assistance to those affected by domestic violence.

“The fundraising potential is limitless,” said Vicki Meilach, community outreach coordinator at SSFS. “We work with a company that specializes in the collection and responsible recycling of used cellular phones. Approximately 60 percent of recycled cell phones have resale value as refurbished phones.

“Through the reuse program, phones are distributed to wireless markets worldwide in need of affordable communication,” she explained. The remaining 40 percent are disposed of in environmentally safe ways, and the metals are reclaimed.

The agency in Homewood is accepting cell phone donations at its administrative office at 18139 Harwood Ave. Receipts are provided for these tax-deductible donations.

Organizations or businesses willing to serve as a drop-off site can contact Meilach at 708-794-2140, ext. 303 for additional information.

Proceeds from the used cell phone collection help fund SSFS services, including a 24-hour hotline, medical advocacy, court advocacy, counseling, abuser intervention programs, and emergency shelter. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish.
