Four summer science camp programs for elementary, middle and junior high students are being organized by the Homewood Science Center.
Science Minors Club is designed for students in second through fifth grades. The week-long program from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 11 through 15, offers early, hands-on exposure to science activities that builds curiosity and encourages teamwork. Topics cover science and engineering.
There is a $100 fee for this program, which is supported by the Museum of Science and Industry.
Summer of Code for beginners is offered in two five-week sessions. Cool Coders for children ages 9 through 13 meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 12. The Web Wizards class for children ages 6, 7 and 8, meets from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 12.
Students participating in these beginner classes are introduced to the Blockly coding language and will go home with resources to continue coding after the sessions.
There is a $225 fee for the Cool Coders program, and a $180 fee for the Web Wizards course.
Students in fifth through eighth grades can participate in the Digital Fix:// Build.An.App program meeting from 10 to 3 p.m. June 18 through 28, with a presentation of the class’s digital products at 7 p.m. on June 29.
Week 1, students will work in teams to design a mobile app that can help solve a problem. Week 2, students will collaborate to bring visual stories to life using green screen technology. They will design phases of pre-production, production and post-production for photo and video content.
There is a $160 fee for this program.
The Rube Goldberg Inventor’s Camp for fifth through eighth graders meet from 9 a.m. to noon July 16 through 20. This session will challenge students to brainstorm and build a complex contraption using six basic simple machines: wheel and axle, wedge, lever, inclined plane, pulley and screw. Kids will design, construct and test a Rube Goldberg-like device that completes a task.
There is a $175 fee for this program.
