The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Flossmoor Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor.

Former Western Avenue teacher Terry DeBruin is helping organize the tribute to Henneberry, who is 91 and a Homewood resident. She said the event is open to Western Avenue alumni and their families, parents, teachers, students, friends, community members “and anybody else who may be interested in attending.”

This year marks Western Avenue’s 70th anniversary and the school will also be honored at the event, DeBruin said.

Henneberrry was principal of Western Avenue School from 1968 to 1985. DeBruin helped compile his sayings into the book, “Words from Mr. Henneberry: An Inspiration to His Students.”

“The book shares some memories which help us to understand the values he taught and the amazing effect and influence he had on each individual…whether a student, parent, or teacher,” DeBruin said. “What is amazing is that many of the things he did, taught and had us do were timeless, and ahead of his time.”

The book focuses on a collection of affirmations, expressions and advice that Henneberry shared with students, parents and colleagues at Western Avenue School, she said.

Henneberry’s words, DeBruin said, “taught timeless values and life lessons which left a positive and lasting impact.”

Persons wishing to reserve a book can do so by contacting DeBruin at [email protected]. The price of each copy is $10.
