H-F purchasing Chromebooks, updating computer network

The Technology Department at Homewood-Flossmoor High School will be purchasing 700 Chromebooks for student use and updating the school’s computer network using a $510,000 expenditure approved by the District 233 school board May 15.
Technology Department Director Gary Posing said the district has about 3,000 Chromebook laptop computers and is able to serve every student at H-F. The addition of 700 new machines will allow the district to rotate out its older stock.
Posing said some schools are replacing the computers on a three-to-four-year cycle, but he hopes H-F can be on a four-to-five-year cycle because students don’t take the machines home. Students can check out Chromebooks for use at home.
A technology subcommittee recommended to Posing that machines for each student be left in the classroom. Teachers said this procedure guarantees each student has a fully charged device immediately available at the start of class.
The technology team also is working on hardware upgrades and improvements for wireless infrastructure expansion to eliminate dead zones and reduced service areas.
The board also agreed to a recommendation to give the College Engineering class taught by Anthony Svozil a higher grade weight to Advanced Placement/B Tier 4. Through a cooperative agreement, students in the class will receive three semester hours of credit from the Illinois Institute of Technology transferrable to any four-year institution.
In other business, the board agreed to hire Legacy Professionals LLP for $20,950 to conduct an audit of the district’s financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018.
