Homewood Farmers Market launches summer season on May 26

The Village of Homewood will begin its summer-long celebration of local farm bounty on Saturday with the launch of a new Farmers’ Market season.

The market will be held every Saturday through Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Avenue Square, 18020 Martin Ave. The popular Wednesday night market, beginning its second year, will open June 6 from 4 to 9 p.m.

Both markets feature a wide assortment of regional farmers, non-profit organization booths, PopUp Science activities sponsored by the Homewood Science Center (HSC), live music and more.

Opening day festivities on May 26 include live entertainment by the James Hart Band and Jazz Band from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by Chris Denman from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be children’s entertainment, including a toddler tent filled with age-appropriate activities. In addition to the food selections, LaVoute will offer summertime refreshments. Patrons can also pick up new Homewood Farmers’ Market reusable bags.

On opening day, the science center will offer drop-in chess games and a mini PopUp Science activity, “Botany & Bees,” from 10 a.m. to noon.

Additional science offerings at the market this summer will include “Metal Mania” on June 9, family chess on June 16, “Science of Healthy Choices” on July 14, “Bubble Bash” on August 18 and “Currents, Fibers and Foam” exhibit during the month of August. These events typically run 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Wednesday evenings, HSC will have open hours from 4 to 6 p.m. for family making projects plus special events on certain evenings such as “All Ages Tech Take Apart with Experimac,” “CodeCreate: Family Edition” and “Currents, Fibers and Foam.” Visit www.HomewoodScienceCenter for full details and registration information.

Food vendors at the market will feature items such as: farm-fresh organic eggs and humanely-raised meats from Milk & Honey Farmstand; fresh fruits and vegetables from Lyons Fruit Farm and Six Generations Farmin’ Local; olive oils, vinegars, salsas and sauces from Sonoma Farm;  homemade scones and cookies from Organic Bread of Heaven; Mexican food from El Coyote; flowers and locally-produced honey from Zeldenrust Farm Market and many others.

The last Saturday of each month will include the popular Hunt & Gather Market, which features unique vintage finds, antique and retro home goods, hand-crafted artisan candles, soaps and jewelry and more.

“After this long cold spring, the community is ready to come together in the sunshine at the Homewood Farmer’s Market,” Special Events Manager Allisa Opyd said. “Last year’s Wednesday night market was extremely successful, so we’re starting that earlier this year. We are also pleased that the Homewood Science Center will have its doors open at so many of our markets including the Wednesday nights for a fuller family experience.”

The market is free and open to the public. There is free parking nearby at the village hall parking lot, 2020 Chestnut Road.  For more information on the Homewood Farmers’ Market, visit homesweethomewood.com or call 708-798-3000.
