Homewood Memorial Day parade, ceremony to honor the fallen

Local veterans will be joined by community leaders and student musicians on Monday, May 28, for Homewood's annual Memorial Day observance to honor those who gave their lives while serving the country.

The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the 17900 block of Dixie Highway and will travel south to Olive Road, then west to Harwood Avenue.

The community will gather at the Veterans Memorial at Harwood Avenue and Olive Road for a ceremony featuring music by members of the James Hart School orchestra and the Homewood-Flossmoor High School marching band.

John Beele, commander of the Wally Burns VFW chapter, will serve as master of ceremonies. Other speakers will include the Rev. Daniel Jarosewicz, associate pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church; Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld; Homewood Veterans Committee Chairwoman Char Dyer; and Don Tollefsen, who will read the names of VFW members who died in the past year.

There will be a wreath-laying ceremony to honor servicemen and women from World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
