The scholarship covers full tuition and housing for four years. The Evans Scholars Foundation selects students based on their strong caddie record, excellent grades, outstanding character and financial need. Reid will use the scholarship to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Reid remembers her caddie training experience when she was 14 and ready for eighth grade at James Hart School in Homewood. Her girlfriends convinced her to go to Flossmoor Country Club with them, but Reid was the only one to finish the week’s training.

“In the beginning my mom had to drag me out of bed. Roll call is at 6:30 in the morning and I remember I was like the size of the bag, I hadn’t gone through my growth spurt yet. It was intimidating,” she recalled.

Over the years, Reis has come to love the work that she describes as “a conversation with your golfer. It’s a pretty unique job.”

“It’s the best job in the world. Getting to know so many older, experienced successful people who can give you so much input, so many care and they see you over the high school career. Those relationships are invaluable,” she said. “Just conversing with adults is helpful and these are amazing people.”

Reid admits she got used to the early morning starts. On good days, when the weather was pleasant, she’d sometimes do a morning and an afternoon round. She loved “making the loop” around the 18-hole course. With her years of experience, she earned the rank of honors caddie, and these days she is helping to train the incoming caddies, like her youngest brother, Kade, who will be a freshman at H-F in August.

“Flossmoor Country Club has a strong caddie program and they have a lot of good members that know the drill of how to help all these young kids,” she said.

The 18-year-old is one of six children of Kelly Reid and Michael Reid. At H-F she was the editor-in-chief of The Voyager, the school newspaper, and was a member of the varsity volleyball team.
