The girls track and field team at Homewood-Flossmoor High School brought home the second place trophy and three first place honors from the Illinois High School Association’s Class 3A meet May 17 and 18.

It’s the second year the girls team has won second place in state. The team members qualified for state by winning first and second in most of the meets in sectionals on May 10.

Olivia Oliver ran her last race
for H-F High on the state
  championship team in the
  4×100 relay race.

Coach Zontavius Johnson said he is excited by the possibilities ahead with so many girls returning and a great frosh/soph team making H-F’s future look bright.

At state, H-F lost first place by six points to Naperville North, and did exceptionally well in competition. In the 4×100 relay, the team of sophomore Kaylah McCall, senior Jackie Bassey, senior Trelyn Newkirk and senior Olivia Oliver were crowned state champions.

In the 100m hurdles, Kylah McCall took the title.

In the 4×200 relay, sophomore Akela White joined Olivia Oliver, Trelyn Newkirk and Jackie Bassey to win second place in state.

And the 4×400 relay team of senior Jaylyn Scales, joined by sophomores Akela White, Amalya Barnes and Asanti Denton took third place.

Rounding out the winning team were junior Trinity Daniels placing fifth in triple jump; Ashanti Denton placing fifth in the 400m; and Jackie Bassey placing eighth in the 100m.

In 2017, H-F was considered a formidable opponent because of Jaime Robinson, who broke records during her high school career and now runs college track.

Johnson said, “We love Jaime. We’re grateful for what she did, but the program is bigger than one person and it’ll be the same way next year. Kayla McCall will come in as the hunted next year. If teams focus on Kaylah McCall, they’ll take their eyes off of Asanti Denton and White and Daniels.”

“We’re confident we’ll be back in state contention next year and bring back another trophy,” Johnson said. “We’re going to be in that conversation definitely for the next two to three years” because H-F has a young team.

H-F has five seniors on the team, and all five are continuing on to college on sports scholarships.

“If money is available you want to take advantage of those things,” he stressed.

Kayla McCall, in center, took the state championship title
  in the 100-meter hurdles.
