South Suburban Hospital gets approval to modernize its surgical suite

Advocate’s South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest received approval for a $97,630,432 modernization of its surgical suite.
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board gave its approval to the project Oct. 30 after hearing Rashard Johnson, the hospital’s president, and a South Suburban Hospital team describe the need.
The project will include replacing the 45-year-old surgical suite with larger, technologically advanced operating rooms, according to the hospital. The board granted a permit for the new addition that will include nine operating rooms and three cardiac catheterization labs. There will be expanded preparation and recovery rooms to serve inpatients, outpatients and their families.
Information from South Suburban explains the modernization of the existing procedure suite will include five endoscopy and bronchoscopy rooms. Johnson told the review board expansion of this service is needed in part due to an aging population that needs timely outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic care.
Vacated space will be used for non-clinical functions including medical staff and administration offices, educational classrooms and materials management.
“We are thankful that the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved our major modernization project, which will be the first substantial improvement as part of our strategic master plan,” said Johnson. “This critical project will ensure that residents of Hazel Crest and the surrounding communities who depend on our hospital’s services will continue to receive the highest level of quality care possible.”
The project was designed by Anderson Mikos Architects, Ltd. of Oakbrook Terrace and the construction team will be Power Construction, Inc. of Chicago. The projected completion date is Dec. 31, 2021.
South Suburban Hospital is part of the Advocate Health network.
