The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will have two teams competing in the United States Tennis Association’s National Adaptive Unified Doubles Tournament in Florida.
Adaptive player Matt Boerema and his partner Milan Miskovic Sr. won the USTA Midwest section in play Oct. 13 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet & Fitness Club. Finalists were Nick Brozek and his partner David Loo.
Adaptive tennis allows players with a disability to learn and enjoy the game. Boerema has been in the program for years, and has won several medals at various competitions across the country. A unified team follows Special Olympics rules pairing an adaptive player with intellectual disabilities with a partner without intellectual disabilities.
For the Orlando, Florida, tournament Dec. 15 and 16, Boerema is paired with Miskovic. Brozek will also represent the Midwest, but his partner will be Jamie Oppenlaner, chair of the Midwest Adaptive Committee.
Travel expenses are covered by USTA and Midwest Adaptive Tennis.
