Not much snow but winds cause power outages, disrupt train traffic

The Homewood-Flossmoor area did not get a large amount of snow overnight, but rain, snow and gusty winds caused problems nevertheless.

There are reports of power outages in a number of areas around Homewood and Flossmoor, with more than 1,000 customers without power. ComEd’s outage map notes that some outages were due to downed trees. 

The neighborhoods north and east of Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood appear to be the most affected by power outages. ComEd reports about 950 customers are without power in that area as of 11 a.m. Crews are currently working to restore power to customers in the northern Homewood area near 175th Streeet and Western Avenue. Crews have been scheduled to work in those areas.

Power is also out in downtown Homewood, with 47 ComEd customers affected, and just east of downtown in the area of Olive Road and Highland Avenue, where 386 customers are affected, according to the company’s outage map.

Other outages appear to be more localized, with just a handful of customers affected. Smaller outages are affecting Heather Road near Argyle Avenue, the area of Sterling Avenue and Brumley Drive, the area of Western Avenue and Alexandria Street, the area of Butterfield Road and Butterfield Circle west of Western Avenue, Hamilton Wood, Hillview Road and the area of Downey Road.

Metra trains were stopped temporarily due to downed power lines in the Hazel Crest area,  Delays on the main line mostly cleared up by 10:30 a.m., but trains departing the Blue Island station were experiencing heavy delays due to wire problems.

Homewood and Flossmoor public schools are in session today. Infant Jesus of Prague school in Flossmoor is closed.
