Franciscan Health marks new beginning with completion of transition to Olympia Fields campus

Franciscan Health is taking the next step in its 106-year commitment to building healthier communities in the Chicago South Suburbs.

As of Friday, Sept. 7, all emergency, inpatient and labor and delivery services at the Chicago Heights campus have been consolidated into the campus in Olympia Fields. Those services, along with outpatient service, are no longer available at Chicago Heights.

The hospital staff has been preparing for this transition for nearly three years, remaking the Olympia Fields campus into an advanced, full-service acute care hospital. This consolidation provides a centralized location where south suburban residents can receive all of their medical services in one state-of-the-art hospital.

“Our long-standing dedication to the people of the Chicago Southland began more than 106 years ago with St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights,” hospital spokeswoman Maria Elena Ramos said in a statement. “For many residents in Chicago Heights and the surrounding areas, that hospital holds memories of significant moments in their lives. We understand that in addition to relocating all patient services from Chicago Heights to the Olympia Fields campus, moving emergency department services in particular represents a considerable transition for many of the people we serve.”

The new emergency department at Olympia Fields is the most advanced in the South Suburbs, hospital officials said. It contains state-of-the-art ambulance bays, new trauma rooms and much more.

“Franciscan Health is more than the walls that contain our medical facilities. We are guided by our mission to provide compassionate, effective health care to all residents of all of the communities we serve,” Ramos said. “Concentrating our resources in one centralized location makes us stronger and better positioned to continue this mission.

“We look forward to a bright future marked by continued growth, as we care for the health of all our neighbors.”
