Unofficial results show Hoag, Mitros ahead in village board race

Two incumbent Flossmoor trustees are ahead in the still-undecided village board election, according to unofficial results from the Cook County Clerk’s office.
Write-in candidates Michelle Svetic Nelson and David Bruni are trailing the incumbents, Perry Hoag and James Mitros, according to tentative results released by the clerk’s office on April 17.
Results from the April 2 consolidated election will not be official until the clerk’s office concludes a canvass next Tuesday.
Colleen Gleason, candidate services manager for the clerk’s office, said Friday that all final results will be certified at 5 p.m. on April 23. The unofficial preliminary write-in results are available at, Gleason said.
According to the unofficial results, Nelson received 903 write-in votes and Bruni received 753.
Hoag and Mitros, along with newcomer Gyata Kimmons, were on the ballot for three village board seats.
Kimmons was the top vote-getter, with 1,485 tallies, which meant that he won a trustee seat regardless of how many write-in votes were cast. Hoag received 1,142 votes and Mitros got 954.
Nelson and Bruni decided to run together as write-in candidates after he was removed from the ballot by the village’s election board, made up of Mayor Paul Braun, Village Clerk Joni Bradley-Scott and Trustee Phil Minga.
On Jan. 22, Bruni was officially removed from the ballot by the election board, which upheld two of the five objections to his petitions by Hoag and Mitros. The board ruled that Bruni had not properly numbered or bound his petitions.
