Spell Check! adult spelling bee to benefit 2020 H-F spring break band tour

Dust off those dictionaries. “Spell Check!” is back.

The adult spelling bee will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Flossmoor Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor.

The event, sponsored previously by the Friends of the Homewood Public Library, is being organized by the HF Band Parents Association and has been repurposed to help raise funds to send Homewood-Flossmoor High School band members on tour during spring break 2020.

Back this year will be emcee Nick Quirke, Amy Eagle as pronouncer and judge and Bob Colton will provide additional game entertainment.

Team members will be able to confer to come up with a spelling of each word they are given, and one representative will spell for them. Individual spellers have a discounted entry fee for being brave enough to spell alone.

Traditional spelling rules will be followed, allowing for questions about word definition, part of speech, language of origin and for the word to be used in a sentence. The final round will require the competitor to spell two words correctly in a row to win.

This year’s event will have a twist in the competition: participants will have the option to buy back in to the bee if they are knocked out of contention in the first round, or opt to buy a different word from the spelling list if they don’t want to attempt the one given to them.

Organizers suggest teams and individual spellers should encourage spectators to come out to support them. Fan gear or spirit wear is welcomed.

The fee for teams of up to six is $200. Individual spellers pay $25. The admission for spectators is $10.

Tickets can be purchased on-line at HFBandTours.org or at the door.

The event is for persons 21 and over. Beer, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase.
