‘Vagina Monologues’ Feb. 9 at Prairie State to benefit SSFS

“The Vagina Monologues” will be performed by local women at a benefit performance at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Prairie State College Barnes and Noble Theatre, 202 S. Halsted, Chicago Heights.

This year’s performance is the fourth in a series of benefit shows that have raised money for the South Suburban Family Shelter.

The play by Eve Ensler is a series of monologues that explore the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement of women’s experiences through diverse perspectives.

The play will be performed by women from the South Suburbs who work as nurses, mental health care providers, teachers, social service providers, are stay-at-home moms, actresses, bartenders and writers. Their experiences with violence against women and children have inspired them to participate in the event.

The show is directed by Chicago actress and Homewood resident Marie Goulet. She has directed and acted in multiple productions of “The Vagina Monologues.”

The performance at PSC will be part of V-Day Chicago, a world-wide fundraising and awareness day with the mission to end violence against women.

Tickets are $20 cash at the door. All proceeds go towards V-Day, a global effort to combat violence against women and children, and local nonprofit organizations South Suburban Family Shelter and LJW Gives.

The V-Day movement has raised more than $120 million. It has helped educate millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it by funding more than 13,000 community-based anti-violence programs. The group has helped reopen shelters and develop safe houses around the world.
