The play takes place on Chicago’s South Side, where three generations of family search for a better life.
It is the story of a black family’s experiences in the Washington Park subdivision of Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood and their attempt to “rise above” with the life insurance payout following the death of the family’s father. The prejudice they face and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world form the heart of this seminal American drama.
Hansberry’s play portrays the universal message of the desire for social progress amid the differing opinions on how to achieve it.

“A Raisin in the Sun” debuted on Broadway in 1959. The title come from the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes, which includes the lines, “What happens to a dream deferred?/Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?”
It was named the best play of 1959 by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.
Performances will be held at The Drama Group’s Studio Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 17 and 24.Tickets are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and $17 for students with ID. Group discount rates are also available. Some of the performances are already sold out, but good seats are still available.
