Homewood trustees to consider local gas tax, alternative water sources

Homewood trustees will consider a measure Tuesday to add a 3-cent per gallon tax to gasoline sold in the village.

If implemented, and in combination with an expected increase in Motor Fuel Tax revenue from the state, the village could more than double the funds used for the street resurfacing program.

Local gas taxes were authorized by a the state capital bill that went into effect July 1.

In other business, Village Manager Jim Marino and Public Works Director John Schaefer will present options the village is exploring for obtaining Lake Michigan water. The village currently buys water from the city of Harvey.

The receiver who manages Harvey's water system finances has proposed raising rates. Homewood is considering three other options, including purchasing water from Chicago Heights, from Oak Lawn or joining a water agency that would pool resources to obtain water.

Also on the agenda:
  • A business incentive of $35,000 for build-out expenses to Vince Cryns, who is bringing a Gloria Jean's coffee shop to the Cherry Creek shopping center.
  • Two measures to authorize paying properties taxes on properties the village recently acquired, the Triumph Building at 2033 Ridge Road and a parking lot in the Southgate shopping center.
  • The oath of office for Dennis Peters as the new Police Department records clerk.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
