Drama Group presents ‘In the Heights’ musical Aug. 2-11

The Drama Group will present the musical “In the Heights” as its final production of the 88th season.
The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 and 2 p.m. Aug. 4 and 11, at The Drama Group’s Studio Theatre at 350 W. 202nd St. in Chicago Heights.
“In the Heights” is set over a three-day period. It tells the universal story of a vibrant community where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.
The Latin-pop music, enthusiastic dancing and passionate lyrics tell of the community on the brink of change. As they move forward, they must decide what traditions to keep and which to cast off.
“In the Heights” was the first musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda when he was a sophomore in college. It opened off Broadway in 2007. Miranda went on to write the hit musical “Hamilton.”
The show’s stage manager is Dayna Sterkowitz of Flossmoor.
Tickets are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and $17 for students with ID. Group discounts are available. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 708-755-3444 or ordered online.
As part of The Drama Group’s community outreach, guests are asked to donate “back to school” supplies that will be distributed through the Jones Memorial Community Center in Chicago Heights.
The Drama Group is one of 23 local arts organizations in SAMBA (Southland Arts Municipalities Business Alliance)
