A night hike version of a walk on the Freedom Trail in South Cook County is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21.

Larry McClellan, a retired Governors State University professor and authority on the Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois, will be joined by Tom Shepherd of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project for this free hike and tour.

They will share information on the escaped slaves who we know today as “freedom seekers.” Before the Civil War, the path to freedom led them to the homes of abolitionists along the river who offered refuge.

The narrated tour and hike will depart from the Beaubien Woods boat launch and last about two hours. It is partly done by bus, which leaves from roughly 134th Street at the Little Calumet River.

The narrated tour and hike will involve moderate walking. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and bring a flashlight or lantern.

Registration is required with Shepherd at [email protected] or (773) 370-3305.
