Liquor license for H-F Racquet and Fitness Club approved

A liquor license was approved for the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club by the Homewood village board Tuesday, June 25. The club is part of the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.

In a letter to Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld, park district Executive Director Debbie Kopas said the racquet and fitness club has seen a membership drop over the last few years. She attributed the drop to more national chain gyms and “boutique-style workout offerings” coming to the area.

The park district is giving the club a makeover, Kopas said. It’s already begun paying dividends and the new liquor license is part of an effort to maintain momentum.

“We would like to offer the opportunity to host social events at the club that encourage members to stay longer and bring their friends. National and local trends indicate that offering opportunities to socialize, along with food and adult beverages, increases participation,” Kopas wrote in the letter.

Kopas said club members have requested food and beverage during tournaments, as well, and the park district would like to keep those tournaments, and the spectators they may bring, on the premises.

A snack and beverage bar within the club will be run by Wiley’s Grill, part of the park district's Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor, and managed by Shari Klein, Wiley's food and beverage manager. She will be in charge of a staff that has been certified to sell and serve alcohol.

The new bar will be called Wiley’s at the Club.

The village code was amended to create a new type of license to fit the needs of the park district. It allows for the sale of any type of alcohol within the property but allows no gaming. The annual fee is $200 and Homewood will only allocate one of the new licenses.
