Homewood trustees to consider ordinance changes to align with new state cannabis law

Wondering how to consume cannabis products in Homewood and stay within the rules established by the new state law allowing for recreational use? The details might be clearer after Tuesday's village board meeting.

Trustees will consider amendments to two chapters of the municipal code that would bring local regulations in line with the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1.

The amendments would specify how much cannabis a person over age 21 can possess and clarify definitions of illegal paraphernalia, among other details.

The board will also receive a presentation on the proposed property tax levy. In a memorandum to Village Manager Jim Marino, Finance Director Dennis Bubenik notes the levy recommendation would authorize an increase of 4.9 percent.

Revenue from the increase is needed for rising pension costs, he said.

In other business, the board will consider:
  • Whether to renew a contract with the Cook County Department of Public Health to perform food establishment inspections.
  • Whether to join the Illinois State Treasurer’s Public Treasurers’ Investment Pool in an effort to reap some revenue from investments.
  • Whether to adopt a new version of the Homewood municipal code to correct an omission when the code was approved at the Oct. 7 meeting.
  • The appointments of Anthony Ruiz to the Community Relations Committee and Gail Garnes to the Senior Advisory Committee, and the reappointments of Jason Baldauf, Janet Hernandez and Maureen Guger to the Tree Committee.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. in the board room at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
