The Johns had their dog, Hunter, for 16 years and were without a pet for a couple of years. “We were waiting until it felt right and finally decided it was time for another dog,” said Cherie Johns.

The timing of that decision happened not long after the Homewood Adoption Center opened. “I had always wanted to volunteer there and saw that they were accepting volunteers at the new location,” she said. She pitches in there about once a week, usually serving as a greeter who shows visitors around and brings dogs out of the kennel, but doing whatever tasks need to be done.
Soon she met an energetic little terrier and decided to bring him home. “Kirby is doing really well. We started training about a month or so ago and he’s come a long way,” she said. “He’s very enthusiastic, very curious and very happy.”
