Parks staff helps take care of flooding issues

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District employees hope they never have to deal again with flooding the likes of what hit the area on Friday, Sept. 27.

At the Oct. 1 park board meeting, commissioners heard of damage reports and special efforts by staff.

Irwin Park in Homewood served as a retention pond as the area got more than 6 inches of rain. The park became a lake of sorts, and the water was so high that it came up to the sidewalk along Ridge Road. Fortunately, no damage was reported at the Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave.

A car ended up in the pond at Dolphin Lake at 183rd Street and Governors Highway. Apparently no one was injured, except for the landscaping along Governors Highway, said Debbie Kopas, parks executive director.

Water inundated the locker rooms and pump room at the Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor.

When the call went out for assistance at Wiley’s, the Coyote Run Golf Course clubhouse, Doug Boehm, superintendent of parks and planning, tried to get there to help with flooding in the lower level that affected mechanical equipment and the elevator.

But Boehm lives on the east side of Homewood and because of flooding in all the viaducts that connect east and west, he couldn’t get to the H-F area west side to give assistance.

The crew from the Ice Arena scrambled across Kedzie to lend a hand at the clubhouse, Kopas said.

“It was a group effort. It didn’t matter what area you worked in as a regular assignment, everyone pitched in,” Kopas said when she thanked staff for their team effort.
