The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) opens its 42nd season on Saturday, Oct. 19, with “Opening Night: Rhapsody in Blue” featuring Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Anderson’s “Piano Concerto in C,” Piston’s “Symphony No. 4” and the premiere of a new work by Martha Horst.

The performance has a 5:30 p.m. start at Ozinga Chapel in Palos Heights, and will be followed by an opening night post-concert celebration at Midlothian Country Club. During the post-program event, IPO will present the Ruth D. and Ken M. Davee Excellence in the Arts Award to the non-profit organization Sharing Notes, which brings music to Chicago hospital patients.

Maestro Stilian Kirov leads the orchestra for his third season with IPO. The evening opens with the world premiere of “Ukko” written by Martha Horst, IPO’s second composer-in-residence and winner of the 2019 Classical Evolve Composer Competition. The piece depicts the Finnish god of thunder and is a remembrance of Horst’s time living in Finland.

Renowned pianist Xiayin Wang will perform the works of Anderson and Gershwin. She most recently performed with RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, Ireland.

Concert single tickets start at $27 in advance. Student tickets are $10. Season subscriptions are available. Post-concert celebration tickets are sold for $100.
