Pickleball courts, lessons available through H-F Park District

The pickleball craze has come to the H-F area.
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District made two outdoor pickleball courts at Lions Club Park, 1041 Ridge Road in Homewood, and the Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W 183rd St., is hosting a pickleball primer at various times this fall.
Pickleball, developed in 1965, combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
It is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and with a slightly modified, and lower, tennis net. The pickleball paddle is solid and smaller than a tennis racquet but larger than a ping-pong paddle. The ball is unique, with holes through it like a whiffle ball.
At the racquet club, pickleball court dimensions are marked on the 10 tennis courts. The lines don’t interfere with tennis regulations, said Umang Chadda, racquet sports manager. The courts at Lions Park are specific to pickleball rules.
Pickleball can be played by all ages as a singles or doubles game. The eight-week sessions at the racquet club are for persons 19 and older.
Sessions are ongoing. The next scheduled sessions will meet Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 29 through Dec. 17; Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 through Dec. 18; and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 2 through Dec. 21.
Chadda also has pickleball meet-ups planned. Equipment is available from the racquet club.
