Several long-term projects are on the agenda of Monday’s Flossmoor Village Board meeting.
Board members are being asked to approve the next phase of a water supply study that will pave the way for Flossmoor making a significant change in how the village receives its Lake Michigan water. Under the proposed plan, Flossmoor would purchase its lake water from Chicago Heights, to the south, instead of Harvey to the north. The switch would go into effect in 2022.
The board will also continue its discussion of a new municipal budget and future funding for projects like a comprehensive street repair program, sewer improvements and a downtown streetscape initiative.
The most striking feature of Monday’s meeting, however, is likely to be how much it is being affected by today’s unique realities. The COVID-19 crisis is preventing board sessions from being conducted at village hall and board members are meeting remotely. No residents will be present and community members will only be able to follow the meeting via phone hookup.

Other agenda items include:
- The appointment of an interim fire chief following the resignation of the former chief, Chris Sewell, in January.
- Consideration of an ordinance that would give emergency powers to Mayor Paul Braun, if necessary, during the current coronavirus pandemic. The ordinance would allow the mayor to make emergency decisions and authorize the spending of money when such actions would need to be expedited between village board meetings. The ordinance would give the mayor that authority but would come to an end at the next board meeting, unless renewed.
- Discussion of a funding request that would allow Flossmoor to join the GIS Consortium, which provides a Geographic Information System for more than 30 suburban communities. As proposed, GIS capabilities will help staff to manage information on properties and infrastructure more efficiently, as well as communicate information on infrastructure more effectively with village residents.
