Coping with COVID-19: April 17

Frame by Frame Film Fest goes online Saturday at 7 p.m. Illinois sets a new record for COVID-19 cases in one day. Plus, an appropriate meme.

Frame by Frame Film Fest goes online Saturday. H-F High School junior Lauren Matthews started a film festival focusing on animation, special effects and editing. She had planned to hold the viewing and awards event at the Homewood Science Center on April 18, but the COVID-19 pandemic interfered. Instead, she will produce a video event that will be shown online at 7 p.m. Saturday. She received 44 entries from 31 countries, and will present awards in two categories, digital animation and special effects/editing.

Another record. On Thursday, Illinois broke the record for most COVID-19-related deaths in a single day, with 124. On Friday, the number of deaths dropped to 62 but the number of new cases set a new record with 1,824. Gov. J.B. Pritzker noted that increased testing contributes to higher positive case numbers. “This was the second highest day for testing,” he said. “That leads to a higher amount who are tested positive.” He and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Ngozi Ezike both emphasized that the number of cases has not yet peaked.

Meme of the day: Making the rounds on Facebook: “Here’s a very appropriate analogy: The curve is flattening; we can start lifting restrictions now = The parachute has slowed our rate of descent; we can take it off now.”
