Pritzker extends stay-at-home order to May 30 with some adjustments

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announces an extension of the statewide stay-at-home order, with some adjustments, through May 30.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Thursday that the stay-at-home order that has shut down much of the state’s economy and social activity will be extended to May 30.

The new order, designed to continue the fight against the spread of COVID-19, will include some adjustments that Pritzker characterized as “minor” but represent the beginnings of reopening the state.

The adjustment will also include an additional mitigation measure that already has been adopted by 19 Chicago suburbs. Face coverings will be required for anyone over age 2 who can tolerate such a covering when in public settings where physical distancing recommendations cannot be observed.

The adjustments will also include:

  • Conducting some scheduled surgeries that were delayed by the original COVID-19 mitigation order.
  • Retail stores that were not identified as essential businesses will be able to make sales online and by phone for pickup or delivery.
  • There will be a phased opening of state parks, allowing activities like hiking, fishing and boating that lend themselves to physical distancing.

Pritzker cautioned that if people begin gathering in crowds that violate the physical distancing requirements, that people maintain at least 6 feet of space between individuals, the original restrictions could be restored.
