Homewood trustees to consider measure allowing outdoor dining during pandemic

Homewood trustees will consider a measure at their meeting Tuesday to allow local restaurants to provide outdoor dining service consistent with the state’s Restore Illinois plan.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order in March forbidding indoor dining service in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Since then, restaurants have been able to provide service by drive-thru, takeout or delivery.

In phase 3 of the state’s plan to gradually reopen the economy now that COVID-19 cases and deaths have stabilized, restaurants will be allowed to provide outdoor service with physical distancing measures in place.

The measure before the board will amend the village code to allow temporary outdoor food and liquor service.

The board will also consider a change order for the water delivery project to include a corrosion study to comply with state requirements and ensure the water quality will not be adversely affected by the move to a new source.

Homewood is in the process of shifting from Harvey to Chicago Heights as its source of Lake Michigan water.

In other business, the board will consider a resolution authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with a number of nearby municipalities for provision of fire station alerting equipment and software under a FEMA grant.

The board originally had planned to hold a public hearing on a proposed tax increment financing district (TIF) in the area of Dixie Highway and Miller Court, the site of the former Bogart’s Charhouse, but the hearing is expected to be postponed.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Trustees will attend by video conference. Members of the public can monitor the meeting by dialing (312) 626-6799. The meeting ID is  961 6038 1330 and the password is 292 310.

Anyone can comment on agenda items or other subjects related to village business by email to [email protected] or by placing written comments in the drop box outside village hall. Comments received by 4 p.m. on the day of the meeting will be read into the record of the meeting.
