Homewood trustees to consider special use permit for casino parking garage

The Illinois Gaming Board has yet to name the location for a possible south suburban casino, but Wind Creek, which has proposed developing a gaming establishment in Homewood and East Hazel Crest, is seeking a special use permit for a parking garage as part of its preparations.

Wind Creek plans to build a four-story, 725-space parking garage on a seven-acre parcel in Homewood just south of 174th Street if its application is approved by the gaming board. The casino itself would be built on adjacent land in East Hazel Crest.

Trustees will also consider a resolution to disband the Emergency Medical Fund Committee, which was formed in 1981 to support fundraising to help supply the Homewood Fire Department with medical equipment. According to a staff memo, the majority of the department’s equipment needs are now provided by the village general fund, so the committee is no longer required.

In other business, the trustees will consider:

  • Amending the Homewood Science Center’s lease with the village to include property at 2018 Ridge Road, formerly Karate for Kids. The property was given to the village with the understanding that it would be used by the science center.
  • Awarding a contract and make a budget adjustment for a project to repave the village hall parking lot.
  • A zoning variance for residents at 18514 Ashland Ave. to allow parking in the front yard.

Following the completion of the open meeting agenda, the board plans to convene in closed session to review past closed session minutes and to discuss pending litigation.

The meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday will be conducted remotely via the video conferencing application Zoom. The public is invited to monitor the meeting by dialing 312-626-6799. The meeting ID is 961 6038 1330, and the password is 292 310.

Members of the public may comment on agenda items or other subjects related to village business by email to [email protected] or by placing written comments in the drop box outside village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. Comments received by 4 p.m. on Tuesday will be read into the record of the meeting.
