Letter: Dunning’s Market helps build community

Dear Chronicle,

Thank you for highlighting the vibrancy that Dunning’s Market brings to our community.  Whether in Cherry Creek Plaza or downtown Flossmoor, the market is a community highlight. The staff is always friendly and the food never misses the mark for being fresh and delicious. Perhaps, the most endearing feature of Dunning’s is its owner, which you have highlighted so nicely in your Oct. 1 story about the market’s success.

With my own eyes, I have seen Maureen Mader give a cookie to a young student after he shared a recent school success, and take food out to the car of a neighbor physically unable to safely navigate the curb in front of the store.

Most recently, her generosity played a significant hand in providing a healthy protein choice to a family facing the double burden of a cancer diagnosis and food insecurity.

She is always thinking of ways to make her business essential to community members, whether by creating the Supper Club and most recently the Kids Club. Both concepts were good business decisions.

To Maureen, the greater reward seems to be supporting families to meet the nutritional needs of all family members while working and educating full time during these very tenuous times.

I applaud the paper for highlighting one of my favorite hometown spots and my personal hometown hero.
