Tax levy, 2 proposed businesses on Homewood trustees’ agenda

Owners of two proposed businesses will have requests on the Homewood Board of Trustees agenda during its regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 27. The board will also hear a presentation on the draft 2020 real estate tax levy and consider ordinances to formally establish a downtown TIF district.

Zenovia Love is seeking a special use to operate a learning center at 18675-18677 Dixie Highway, formerly Reflections Yoga. Her business, Love Events, would provide health and wellness activities, business networking, parties and other special events.

Laura Carbajal de Garcia has submitted a request for a liquor license for her proposed restaurant, Don Goyo Fine Mexican Cuisine at 17536 Dixie Highway.

The board is expected to establish the new tax increment financing district (TIF) on the east side of Dixie Highway, including Miller Court parcels and the former Bogart’s Charhouse restaurant. The village plans to demolish the old restaurant building, and officials hope TIF financing will help attract a company to redevelop the property.

In other business, the board will consider:

  • An extension to the ordinance that allowed bars and restaurants to provide outdoor food and liquor service as a way to support local businesses suffering the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Renewing the village’s contract with the Cook County Department of Public Health for environmental health and food establishment inspections.
  • A budget amendment that would allow the village to purchase two new police vehicles to replace vehicles considered to be nearing their end of expected usefulness.
  • An amendment to the ordinance that regulates fees levied on businesses and residents for excessive false burglary, robbery or fire alarms. The change would reduce the number of categories from three to two, with banks and financial institutions added to the commercial category instead of being in a separate category.
  • Appointing Karen Gallagher to the Beautification Committee and reappointing Barbara Ferrari to the Storm Water Resources Committee.

The meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday will be conducted remotely via the video conferencing application Zoom. The public is invited to monitor the meeting by dialing 312-626-6799. The meeting ID is 961 6038 1330, and the password is 292 310.

Members of the public may comment on agenda items or other subjects related to village business by email sent to [email protected] or by placing written comments in the drop box outside village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. Comments received by 4 p.m. on Tuesday will be read into the record of the meeting.
