H-F broadcast, video students win awards

A 90-second movie trailer created by two students at Homewood-Flossmoor High School won first prize in the Golden Lion Film Awards competition.

The winning video, “Unhinged” by H-F senior Adam Freeman and Class of 2020 graduate Caroline Johnson, is a psychological thriller about a girl trapped in a house and in her own mind, said teacher Matt Holdren.

Juliette Benjamin, Xander Branch and Ruben Villarreal won third place honors for their music video “Selfish.”

In the commercial category, finalists were Jacob Goldberg and Ben Hamer for “Tesla Commercial” and Adam Freeman for “Desserts by Jane.”

In the long documentary category, finalists were Juliette Benjamin for “The Matthew Kocher Story” and Ben Hamer for “Phase One.”

In the short documentary category, Maya Nash, Prasanth Madana and Manal Azam were finalists for “Changemakers: Now Is the Time.”

In the short narrative category, Jacob Goldberg and Devin Gorton were finalists for “Last Man Standing.”

In the alternative category, senior Lauren Matthews was a finalist with her live action and animated film “Reimagined.”

The submitted projects were completed in the last school year. They work under the direction of teachers Mark Ciesielski in broadcasting and Holdren in film.

“Our students have a special opportunity where they get to learn about media from a fiction and nonfiction aspect. Not many schools in the country offer that opportunity to kids. This program highlights how effective it is by the amount of winners we have each year in all our competitions,” Holdren said.
