Flossmoor Village Board approves $116,106 for emergency sewer work along Vollmer Road

The Village of Flossmoor paid $116,106.88 for work done over the past few months on Vollmer Road’s 24-inch sanitary sewer.

The village board voted unanimously Monday, May 17, to approve the expenses paid to Michels Corporation, which relined two segments of Flossmoor’s sanitary sewer and more under “emergency” circumstances.

In early January, the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways discovered an issue with the sewer at the northeast corner of Vollmer Road and Crawford Avenue, according to a report filed by Public Works Director John Brunke. While doing repair work on the county’s storm sewer, crews reportedly found settlement of the subbase below the storm sewer elevation and toward the Village’s sanitary sewer and manhole, per the report.

Michels inspected the sanitary sewer and manhole using a video camera, Brunke said. The company found the sewer under Vollmer Road to be in “very poor condition,” with holes in the pipe and several leaks, Brunke reported.

Brunke explained the village had to move fast so that Cook County could complete its work. Michels was paid to reline 370 feet of the sewer and seal the sanitary drop manhole at the corner. Work was completed between February and April.

“We’re definitely appreciative of your quick work and also the collaboration with Cook County,” Mayor Michelle Nelson told Brunke. “It could have been a lot worse had we had to do that on our own.”

Brunke noted the work that was done should have some longevity to it.

“It’s going to be in place for a long time,” he said. “I would say at least 40-50 years, we should be in good shape.”

More work likely needs to be done upstream, though, Brunke said. That project is going to be earmarked for future funding in the budget.
