Homewood trustees approved a Halsted Street planned-unit development Tuesday, Dec. 23, after the developer returned with revisions to the building design.

The building at 17725 Halsted St. will house Sleepy’s, a bedding business, and a food establishment to be determined.  The site was formerly the home of Arby’s Restaurant.

The PUD was tabled at the Dec. 9 board of trustees meeting when several trustees, joined by Village President Richard Hofeld, criticized the design, which included a relatively featureless expanse on the west side and exposed cinder block construction. The building’s entrances will be on the east side, facing toward the nearby shopping center.

Trustee Jay Heiferman said the bland look was inappropriate for such a highly visible portion of the structure.

The revised design includes display windows and awnings on the west side and a cultured stone exterior to improve the building’s appearance.

Heiferman thanked architect Jim Wagener and developer William Shiner for making the design changes.
