Traffic was slow at the 183rd Street viaduct Thursday afternoon and is likely to be slow Friday morning, too, as Homewood Public Works crews implement a plan to combat nuisance birds.

H-F Foundation awards 14 scholarships

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Foundation presented 14 scholarships at the May 20 honors convocation. The awards will help underwrite college expenses. The foundation manages and distributes the scholarship awards funded by families and friends or through special donations.

Most winners were chosen by a selection committee established by the Guidance Office. The award, the student recipient and the school they will attend follows:

New Thornton Quarry reservoir ‘like no place else’ in the world

What was under water 350 million years ago will be under water again this summer when the Thornton Composite Reservoir opens. A 17-year project by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, it will be big enough to prevent flooding in an area ranging from the south side of Chicago to Homewood and Flossmoor.

Victim uninjured in armed robbery May 16

An armed robbery occurred just before midnight Saturday, May 16, in the parking lot of a restaurant in the 18800 block of Dixie Highway, according to Homewood police.

The robber approached as the victim opened a car door, police said.  

"The male offender was wearing dark clothing and displayed a dark colored handgun," said Homewood Deputy Police Chief Denise McGrath. "The offender ran off with the victim’s bag.  The victim was not physically injured."

H-F District 233 board renews major service contracts

Satisfactory work led the Homewood-Flossmoor Board of Education to renew several contracts for the coming school year, including food service, custodian service and athletic training.
