Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors Allie Mangel, Andronicus Marati and Alessandro Vazquez have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

To be part of the program, the three seniors had to score exceptionally well on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors. Nationally, 50,000 students qualified initially. The pool then was cut to 16,500 who were selected semi-finalists.

H-F recently learned these students are among the 15,000 finalists based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. Final decisions will be made in spring, and the students will learn if they are receiving a corporate-sponsored scholarship, a college-sponsored scholarship or a National Merit scholarship.

Allie hasn’t made a final college selection. The daughter of Vicky Valancius-Mangel of Homewood, Allie plans to double major in music performance and mathematics.

Andronicus hasn’t made a final college selection. He is the son of Paramjyothi and Kanakalatha Marati of Homewood. He is planning to major in neurosciences on the pre-medicine track.

Alessandro hasn’t made a final college selection. He is the son of Luis and Ana Vazquez of Chicago Heights. He will major in biology on the pre-medicine track.
