McDermott May 2016 extension Sept

Area residents typically visit Izaak Walton Preserve to hike, bike and fish. In three weeks, there will be another reason to visit: the art.

The preserve will host an art show, “The Nature of Art,” in Senior Hall Lodge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

Izaak Walton, 1100 Ridge Road, is a place to appreciate the beauty of nature, with five miles of trails that wind through prairie, woodland and around small lakes, organizers said. The art show will be a chance to see how area artists interpret and portray nature scenes.

The show will highlight more than a half dozen local and regional artists from a variety of backgrounds and using a variety of media. Visitors will have the opportunity to view or purchase photography, paintings, mixed-media art, wood-cut prints and more.

Live acoustic music will be provided Saturday at 3 p.m. by Yellow Day‘s Ryan McGrath and Cara Sanchez.

Featured artists, with descriptions from their websites, will include:

  • Cousandra Armstrong: “I am a  freelance photographer and … I love the woods.  I walk in the woods every day and as I walk in the woods I see the most beautiful things just sitting there so what I’ve done is I’ve taken the flowers from gardens and incorporated them in the woods. I’ve taken trails and the streams, and the sky and put them together to get a full scale of life as life is.”
  • Corey Hagelberg: “I seek to emphasize and embrace opposites and contradictions in our everyday experiences. My work blurs the line between humor and tragedy, current and historical, high art and low art, natural and industrial, accusation and confession, and beautiful and grotesque.”
  • Michael Wasniowski: “Most of my photography is on the road and often I return home with rolls of film that will contain several different image types: abstract, figurative, surreal, etc. Each series starts out as two to three images that have a similar theme and then I scour my archives looking for images that correspond.”
  • Heather Marcum: “I am predominantly a nature/macro photographer. l also do still life and conceptual photography. I am published in both print and digital media. Photos I’ve taken at Izaak Walton have been featured on WGN News before.”
  • Sarah Mcnabb: “A common theme in my work is that of the movement of natural elements: waves and fire; intertwined roots, hair and bone; and the connections between decadent textures, mythologies and industrial inventions.”
  • Stephanie Monroe: “I have always looked at the world in terms of the finer details. Intricate parts of the larger picture are what I appreciate the most. Nature’s designs are all around us if we just take time to notice. It wasn’t until I touched clay that I found my medium of choice. Working in clay is nourishing, and gives me an inner peace with satisfaction. I strive to make a piece as natural as possible. Art and life are all about the details.”
