Homewood-Flossmoor High School will be well represented at the national Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition July 14 through 17.
The program hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will be in Cincinnati. H-F students won the right to advance after winning gold medals at the April regional competition at H-F High.
H-F competitors are current students and May 2016 graduates.
H-F students are Aundria LaNier competing in Dramatics and Music Vocal Contemporary; Keita Morris competing in Spoken Word; and Nacyla Mitchell competing in Oratory.
H-F Class of 2016 graduates are Janelle Butler, who will attend Georgia State University, competing in Visual Arts Photography; Naj’ee Chatman, who will attend Columbia College, competing in Music Vocal Classical and Poetry Writing; Ashlie Glasper, who will attend Pratt Institute, competing in Visual Arts Drawing.
Camryn Hutchinson, who will attend the American Musical & Dramatic Academy, competing in Modern Dance; Leah Moss, who will attend Lake Forest College, competing in Short Story Writing; and Justin Thomas, who will attend Columbia College, competing in Music Composition.
H-F students who received silver or bronze medals at the regional event were: Kenneth Bivens, who will attend the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, and current H-F students Ebony Lennox, Rita Taylor-Wicks, Jabari Tate, Rosemary McClendon and Paighton Thomas.
Students who compete in the local and national ACT-SO competition can enter as many as three categories from Sciences, Performing Arts, Humanities, Visual Arts and Business specialties.
ACT-SO provides an opportunity for high school students of African or Latino heritage to display their skills and talents.
