A local artist is again this year raising money to help student artists, but this time, with laughter

Marc Alan Fishman, a comic book artist known for his work on the Think Homewood marketing project for the village in 2018, will be performing standup comedy at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Redbird Cafe, 2057 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Doors will open at 6 p.m.

There are 25 tickets available for the event. Each ticket will cost $5.

Last year, Fishman sold T-shirts with an avocado/kombucha theme he designed, a reference to the dialogue in the Think Homewood cartoon panels. He sold enough to make a $1,000 donation to the District 153 Visual Arts Activity Fund, which he and district art teacher Anne Siegler started last year to provide support for visual art instruction.

All proceeds from the performance Saturday will be donated to the fund. Fishman said last year that he wanted to support the program that helped him develop his love for art.
The performance will be professionally recorded, and Fishman plans to sell the album to continue the fundraising effort after the event.

“My goal this year is to make $1,001. Granted, it might be a little harder to do with a $5 ticket sale, but, I’m nothing if not industrious,” he said in an email to the Chronicle.

Fishman is a regular performer at Bird is the Word, a spoken word open mic session hosted at Redbird on the third Thursday of each month.

He also is a partner in Unshaven Comics, which publishes a number of comic books, including The Samurnauts series. He and a partner, Matt Wright, periodically teach comic book art classes through the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.
